Truth-Telling

Aboriginal truth-telling is a process that acknowledges the impacts of colonisation and injustices faced by Aboriginal people. 

Truth-telling aims to:

  • Recognize the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples 
  • Understand the connections between First Nations peoples and Country 
  • Address trauma and healing 
  • Promote reconciliation and healing 
  • Develop a shared understanding of Australian history 
  • Improve relationships between First Nations and non-Indigenous peoples 

Truth-telling can include: 

  • Official apologies 
  • Memorials 
  • Ceremonies 
  • Public art 
  • Storytelling 
  • Acknowledging places and landscapes
